AHA voices concern over proposed CMS quality reporting requirements

Proposed CMS quality measure reporting requirements detailed in the 2016 prospective payment rule have providers concerned, according to a Modern Healthcare article. CMS plans to require inpatient hospitals to provide details on how they’ll meet the new quality metrics by October 1, 2017.

But the lack of a National Quality Forum stamp of approval for the quality measures is a problem, according to a letter from the American Hospital Association (AHA). As a result, the AHA said in a comment letter, there is “limited insight on whether the measures are reliable, accurate, and feasible enough for public reporting programs.”

The metrics are tied to the treatment of conditions including kidney and urinary tract infections, intestinal bleeding, lumbar spine fusion, and hip replacements. CMS accepted comments on the proposed rules through last Tuesday and plans to issue a final rule by August 1.
