From the AHAP Blog: Hospital says it will not hire smokers
Many hospitals have some sort of program to help curb smoking–whether it’s a smoking cessation program, educational materials, even incentives for living a healthier lifestyle. And certainly where and when an employee can smoke has become increasingly restrictive. But one Tennessee hospital has taken its stance on smoking to the next level: Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga, TN will no longer hire smokers beginning next month.
Prospective employees will be tested for nicotine prior to hiring. Officials for the hospital have said that the move is not intended to cut healthcare costs associated with smokers, but rather a way for the hospital to set an example of healthy living for the surrounding community.
