From the AHAP Blog: Sentinel Event Alert: Preventing workplace violence
The Joint Commission has released its latest Sentinel Event Alert, this time on preventing violence in the workplace.
The report states that assault, rape, and homicide make up a category of sentinel events that is consistently among the top ten sentinel events reported to The Joint Commission. The Sentinel Event Database shows 256 incidents reported in this category since 1995, with 110 of those incidents occuring in the last three years.
The report goes on to examine methods for identifying high risk areas, perpetrators of violence onto patients, and prevention strategies. (The Joint Commission’s standards address violence in the Environment of Care chapter, and specifically under the Rights and Responsibilities of the Individual standard (01.06.03).
