From the AHAP Blog: Texting verbal orders FAQ published
November 22, 2011
The Joint Commission has published an FAQ addressing texting orders on its Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page for the following accreditation programs:
- ambulatory
- behavioral health
- critical access
- disease specific
- home care
- hospital
- lab services
- long term care
- office-based surgery
The FAQ indicates, for hospitals, that texted orders are not acceptable from physicians or licensed independent practitioners. Texted orders do not allow for verification of the sender, nor can they be saved in such a way as they can be used in the medical record as confirmation of the order.
