California lawmakers mull workplace violence bill after attacks on nurses

The California state legislature is debating a bill calling for violence prevention plans in hospitals following two attacks in Los Angeles-area hospitals last weekend, according to CaliforniaHealthline.org. One attack occurred at the Olive View-UCLA Medical Center in Sylmar, where a nurse was stabbed by a man who was able to sneak a knife into the facility. Meanwhile, at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, a nurse was stabbed in the ear with a pencil.

 

The bill, introduced by Sen. Alex Padilla, would require the creation of systems for investigating violent incidents, strategies to determine appropriate security staffing levels, and training policies for identification and response to violence.
