CMS to expand hospital infection reporting

The federal government is launching expanded reporting definitions of certain healthcare-associated infections (HAI) to reduce confusion among providers, HealthLeaders Media reports. The effort aims to expand reporting beyond the intensive care unit to general medical/surgical patients.
CMS plans to expand reporting of central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) and catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) to all medical and surgical hospital beds. The changes are expected to increase the number of hospitals that meeting minimum public reporting requirements.
