CMS unveils hospital rating system
April 21, 2015
The CMS last week rolled out a new star rating system on Hospital Compare that uses patient satisfaction data to provide consumers with an indication of quality at nearly 3,500 Medicare-certified acute care hospitals.
The ratings are based on data from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems Survey (HCAHPS) measures included in Hospital Compare. CMS has been using HCAHPS since 2006 to measure patient satisfaction with how well doctors and nurses communicate with patients, how responsive staff were to patient needs, the cleanliness and quietness of hospital environments, and how well the hospital prepared patients for post-hospital settings.
