Examining The Joint Commission WPV requirements
Lauris Freidenfelds, senior project manager for Telgian Engineering & Consulting, says there are many takeaways from the new and revised standards out of TJC:
- WPV prevention is an organizational responsibility, not something relegated to the security department. Appropriate organizational efforts should include better education, reporting, and investigations, as well as full transparency.
- Leadership is now being held accountable for WPV prevention.
- WPV prevention involves a societal component that is rooted in how we see the medical profession today as opposed to 40 years ago.
- Because WPV is causing nurses to leave, the problem calls for a proactive approach.
- Mitigating WPV in healthcare also requires a shift in how we interact with patients and their families. More de-escalation training is needed.
