The fire extinguishers, eyewash stations, and laboratory emergency equipment that will save your life, Part 1

Sitting in your laboratory, can you point out the nearest spill kit, fire extinguisher, eyewash station, and emergency shower? How long did it take you to locate them? Without looking, can you name the PPE and cleaning materials inside your spill kit? What type of fire extinguisher do you have? Is it for electrical fires, flammable liquids, or materials like paper or wood? Even if you were on top of all these answers, emergencies happen quickly in the laboratory, and prompt action from lab staff is just as important as having the right equipment for the job. A good emergency management program focuses on training lab staff and stocking the right materials, says Sean G. Kaufman.
