High reliability and ORO 2.0

High reliability is a new term for an old concept: providing the highest quality products or services consistently and uniformly to all customers. There has been a host of tools, guidelines, initiatives, and programs focused on high reliability in nearly every industry.

However, achieving high reliability takes on a special priority in healthcare, as medical mistakes and errors can result in permanent harm instead of minor inconveniences.

A useful tool for Joint Commission accredited facilities is the accreditor's ORO 2.0 High-Reliability Organization Assessment. ORO 2.0 consists of two parts: an online resource library and an online assessment tool. The assessment portion takes about a month to complete and allows hospitals to quantify their reliability and areas for improvement. Meanwhile, the resource library gives information and advice on how to improve. ORO 2.0 is free for all Joint Commission customers, and its results can't be seen or accessed by surveyors.
