Joint Commission to shelve Top Performer program next year

The Joint Commission is putting its Top Performer on Key Quality Measures program on hiatus in 2016 while it determines how to re-tool the program to fit the changing quality measurement landscape.

The accreditor had already changed its program to match CMS changes to the performance measures in the Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting program. In an article on its website, The Joint Commission said the Top Performer program used the results of a fixed set of accountability chart-based performance measures to compare performance and determine top hospitals. But recent industry changes including the retirement of some accountability measures have made it difficult to compare hospitals and identify top performers.

As a result, The Joint Commission plans to unveil a new program to support its Top Performers; details will be announced in the fall.
