Pneumonia guidelines updated for 2022

It’s time to review and revamp your pneumonia prevention policies. A collaboration of healthcare organizations has updated their pneumonia prevention and care guidelines for the first time in eight years. The guidelines include several new best practices and recommend against several current practices, such as the use of probiotics and chlorhexidine for oral care.

“The purpose of this document is to highlight practical recommendations to assist acute care hospitals to prioritize and implement strategies to prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), ventilator-associated events (VAE), and non-ventilator hospital-acquired pneumonia (NV-HAP) in adults, children, and neonates,” the guidelines state.
