Report: Sepsis connected to shocking number of patient deaths

A report from researchers at Kaiser Permanente Northern California found that as many as one in two or one in three patients who die while hospitalized have sepsis. In most cases, the patients were septic on admission but not seriously ill, which meant delays in treatment, according to HealthLeaders Media.

Researchers examined the records of 7 million non-obstetric patients hospitalized between 2010 and 2012, mostly from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample of 1,051 hospitals and the remainder from 21 Kaiser Permanente hospitals in Northern California. The report emphasizes the importance of early recognition of sepsis in patients.
