Study: Majority of U.S. hospitals overuse antibiotics
September 16, 2014
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Premier Safety Institute last week released a study that found overuse and inappropriate of antibiotics occurs in 78% of U.S. hospitals. Researchers looked at data of patients discharged from 505 hospitals between 2008 and 2011.
Eliminating redundant antimicrobial therapy during that time frame could save $163 million, or nearly 2% of the total expenses for all U.S. hospitals in 2012, the study found.
