Peer review in the primary care setting

Ensuring you have competent physicians who are providing high-quality care is essential to the success of any healthcare organization. To evaluate physician care, hospitals and medical staffs have spent years developing their peer review processes. CMS and other major accreditors all require some form of ongoing monitoring of competence, and in 2007, The Joint Commission took peer review a step further by implementing standards for ongoing professional practice evaluation (OPPE) and focused professional practice evaluation (FPPE). OPPE ensures physicians are evaluated on a regular schedule, and FPPE ensures physicians are evaluated when requesting new privileges or when a question about competence is raised.
