Q&A: Joint Commission talks sepsis certification
Editor's note: The following is an edited excerpt from The Joint Commission's recent webinar "Managing patient outcomes: The battle against sepsis!" discussing its disease-specific care program for the condition.
Sepsis occurs in 10% of American patients, or about 750,000 hospitalized patients annually, costing the industry $24 billion each year.
Researchers found that a patient with sepsis is 10 times more likely to die than a patient without it. They also discovered between 34.7% to 52% of hospital deaths nationwide occurred in sepsis patients.
