CMS delays two-midnight rule enforcement
February 11, 2014
After opposition from hospitals and physicians, the CMS has delayed enforcement of its controversial two-midnight rule until October.
The rule is included in the 2014 Medicare Inpatient Prospective Payment Rule and requires that inpatient admissions for at least two midnights qualify for Medicare hospital rates. In addition, a clarification says that although nurses, medical residents, and physician assistants can write admitting orders, only physicians can sign off on inpatient admissions.
