CMS restricts use of power strips in patient care areas

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued guidance effective immediately that restricts the use of relocatable power taps, also known as power strips, to be used with medical equipment in patient care areas, according to an update from the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE). Power strips are not be used in operating rooms, patient rooms, and areas for recovery, exams, and diagnostic procedures.

According to the ASHE release, Joint Commission Department of Engineering Director George Mills said the rule change is frustrating for facility safety professionals because this restriction will lead to trip hazards from extension cords. “This is not necessarily the best solution, but for now, the CMS guidance must be followed,” Mills said.
